In the case of a zoom lens, when the entrance pupil diameter becomes equal to the front lens diameter, the F number decreases because the entrance pupil diameter can not be increased any more. This phenomenon is called F drop. MERCURY designs the front lens diameter larger than the entrance pupil diameter on the telephoto side so that this F drop does not occur.
